Packing peanuts
Prevent damage to your shipments with packing peanuts – lightweight, shock-absorbing, and ready to use. For a more sustainable solution, choose the biodegradable version.
What are packing peanuts?
Packing peanuts are small, lightweight foam pieces that fill empty spaces inside boxes, keeping the contents of your package securely in place during transport. They are ideal for shipping fragile or delicate items, as well as products with irregular shapes.
Why use packing peanuts?
Empty space in a box allows products to shift, which can cause damage. Packing peanuts hold items firmly in place. They are:
- Lightweight (no extra shipping costs)
- Shock-absorbing
- Reusable and, in some cases, biodegradable
- Quick and easy to use
The best tip is to use packing peanuts only when they add real value to the shipment. If you’re just filling space for convenience, we recommend choosing a smaller box instead. Often, the corrugated walls of the box itself already provide enough protection for what’s inside.
Which type should I choose?
The right choice depends on your needs and sustainability goals.
Biodegradable packing peanuts
Made from starch (such as cornstarch), these are fully compostable and a great choice if sustainability is important to you. One downside is that they are less resistant to moisture.

Traditional EPS (polystyrene) packing peanuts
Extremely lightweight and reusable, but not biodegradable. They’re often chosen for their low cost or when the filling can be reused. They are also better suited for use in humid conditions.
How to use packing peanuts effectively
A few tips for using packing peanuts effectively:
- Start with a layer of peanuts at the bottom of the box
- Place your product in the centre
- Fill the remaining space completely
- Seal the box securely with tape
Sustainable packing: think ahead
More and more businesses are looking for ways to pack sustainably. Biodegradable packing peanuts are a simple first step, but you can also consider:
- Reusing void fill materials
- Combining with packing paper or cardboard
- Using boxes that fit your products better, reducing the need for fill
Buying packing peanuts
Protect fragile products with lightweight foam pieces, ensuring they arrive safely to your customers and reducing the chance of returns.
