Package Symbols – Labeling Packages Correctly

Retailers and manufacturers of numerous packages and cardboard boxes should be familiar with the labeling of the corresponding products. Package symbols not only simplify logistics but also significantly improve safety. Package warning labels and all other markings provide the necessary information that people need, not only in the warehouse but also on the shipping and delivery route. This makes it apparent at first glance what type of goods are involved. The handling of the package can be adjusted accordingly. Package symbols are therefore extremely useful, for example, if you want to ship cardboard boxes containing fragile goods.

What Are Package Symbols?

Package symbols, or transport markings, are used in freight transport and shipping. A wide variety of options are available here to draw attention to potential dangers or fragile goods. This is intended to prevent potential damage to the goods themselves. After all, damage to the goods not only causes frustration for the recipient; additional costs and replacement deliveries are not uncommon in this case. This means significant extra effort, which can be avoided by simple package symbols or package warning labels.

Both the sender and the manufacturer of the cardboard boxes or packages can ensure the application of package symbols. Many already use packaging on which the corresponding notes have been printed. However, subsequent application with appropriate stickers is also possible. As a rule, the warning notices are very conspicuous and distinguished from the rest of the shipment by a striking color. This allows the corresponding package symbols to be perceived directly. Variants like "Attention Fragile" or "Please do not throw" are just two of the many examples possible here. Warning labels come in numerous types – with the right adhesive tape, you guarantee the appropriate treatment of the package and ensure that your package arrives undamaged.

Package Symbols Are Important for Shipping Goods

All shippers bear responsibility for the shipping route. It is therefore up to the sender not only to pack the packages appropriately and secure the content against potential damage. The transport risk must be calculated here. Liability in the event of damage or loss lies with the sender, and thus they act in their own interest. Package symbols therefore represent additional security and ensure the undamaged arrival of your package.

With most goods, this is not a problem. However, there are also products such as glass that should be treated particularly carefully during shipping. Package symbols that indicate the content and show corresponding markings can protect against broken goods. No matter how much you secure glass or ceramics in a cardboard box with bubble wrap or other packaging options – the product is still fragile and should therefore not be thrown. So that everyone involved in the supply chain can take exactly that into account, corresponding package symbols are important.

For Which Goods Are Package Symbols Useful?

Basically, it is of course up to everyone whether and, above all, how they label their packages accordingly. However, there are some areas where package symbols must not be missing under any circumstances. Of course, this is no guarantee that the packages will be treated carefully and according to the instructions by everyone on the shipping route. But the chances that the goods arrive intact at the recipient increase significantly.

Package Symbols for Fragile Goods

Easily breakable products should not only be packed securely but also provided with a warning label. There are plenty of possibilities here. Very popular is adhesive tape in red, which features the black words "Attention Fragile". Another variant is a white sticker on which a black wine glass is displayed. It is important that the package symbols are conspicuous in these cases and catch the eye immediately. As a sender, you can also apply the corresponding note on every side of the package to ensure it is not overlooked.

Package Symbols Are Recommended for Electronic Devices

Of course, electronic devices are not as sensitive as glass. However, some things should be considered on the shipping route here as well. The packages themselves should, for example, not be rotated. A note like "This side up" or "Please do not throw" already guarantees a good level of safety. Some senders also explicitly point to the goods and use package symbols such as "Caution sensitive electronic devices".

Package Symbols for Other Goods

There are products that may only be stored at a certain temperature. These include, for example, food. Under certain circumstances, these must not exceed a temperature of 7 degrees Celsius. But some products also react to strong heat or deviating temperatures. Corresponding notes should be used for these packages as well. Basically, it can be said that every product that has special properties and must be treated carefully should also be marked with corresponding symbols.
